News - 14th December 2007

Wednesday 12th December 07 a superb evening at the Masonic Hall, Fishguard, was enjoyed by a few members of the Cardiac Group during another wonderful presentation of £500.00 to the Group presented by Lyndon Richards & Terry Grover, Lodge Charity Stewards, Strumble Lodge of Freemasons on behalf of the Provincial Grand Charity Steward. Cardiac Specialist Nurse Irene Hartup received the magnificence donation, and Margot Jenkins Treasurer for the Group, who were both overwhelmed by the very kind and generous donation made. The presentation was followed by a six-course banquet, entertainment and a large raffle, which raise monies for other local charities, which will be distributed at a later date. During the raffle the secretary of the Cardiac group won a very large “Teddy Bear”, which has been donated to raise further funds by circulating the “Bear” around the other Groups in Pembrokeshire to guest the “Bear’s” name.

Friday 14th December 07 Group members were in the festive spirit, singing various Christmas carols during they’re exercising mode, which seemed almost relaxing to say the least, even with some totally out of tune.

Just a few tips when cooking that festive lunch:

  • Turkey is low in fat and high in protein so tuck in and really enjoy, but don’t eat the skin or you will add lots more fat and calories.
  • Roast your potatoes using pure vegetable oil, olive oil or sunflower oil rather than lard and cut the potatoes into large chunks, as these absorb less fat than small ones.
  • When making gravy, let the fat from the Turkey juices rise to the surface, and then skim it off and use what’s left behind.
  • Eat plenty of vegetables & fruit (at least five a day).
  • Christmas pudding is quite low in fat, so to keep it this way; serve with low fat custard or crème fraiche.
  • For accurate and balanced information on nutrition visit website www.dbaweightwise.com
  • Common sense and enjoy every thing in moderation and avoid becoming another Cardiac statistic.

The Group welcomed yet another four new members, which once again kept Irene our Cardiac Specialist Nurse fully, engaged in her assessment of each patient.

Our next meeting will be Lunch at the Harp Inn, Letterston, on Friday 21st December 07, 12.00 noon for 12.30pm start. The next Rehabilitation meeting will be on 11th January 08, so enjoy your daily walks and keep fit or you will have to answer to Terry our fitness instructor on your return for more strenuous exercises.
