News - 18th April 2008

On Friday 8th April 08, pulse rates of the Ladies in our Group were set racing when they were introduced to Andrew Kirkhouse, a young male Cardiac Nurse, who has worked on the Coronary Care Unit in Withybush Hospital, prior to his 2 year work experience in New Zealand.  Andrew now working in the Community and currently helping Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurse Specialist, Irene for 1day per week is collecting statistical information for Audit, has stated he would like to join the Cardiac Rehabilitation team on a permanent basis as he enjoyed the work involved immensely in particular the warm welcome given to him and the happy, jovial atmosphere during the strenuous work out sessions by all the members of each Group.

It is hope to unite with other groups from Narberth, Pembroke Dock, Neyland & Tenby on 20th May 08, to organise fund-raising and social events during the summer.  The meeting place has been suggested within the Haverfordwest area to avoid too much travelling.

Our birthday boy of the week, Barrie Thomas instead of receiving presents, presented the group with a 7 minute colourful DVD which contains wonderful photographs of our mundane weekly work-outs and also the many Steps2Health walks, which many of our group support.  Hopefully these photographs will be obtainable on our website www.FishguardCRG.co.uk within the near future.

It is widely accepted that eating oily fish is helpful for heart health, but how can you enjoy the benefits without wrecking untold damage on the environment.  Although a balance diet is the best means of obtaining omega-3 for people who are within three months of having had a heart attack and are not getting sufficient amounts through their diet, omega-3 supplements might help. Here are some facts regarding Oily Fish:

Omega-3 per 140g portion (Approximately)

Pilchards (tinned in tomato sauce): 4.0
Mackerel: 3.9
Salmon: 3.5
Sardines (tinned in tomato sauce): 2.8
Herring: 2.5

Include a portion of oily fish in your diet at least once or twice a week if you have had a heart attack.

Ask in your local supermarket for a greater variety of oily fish and check your retailers are stocking sustainable types of fish.  Try different types of oily fish. Bon appetite.

Our next merry meeting of Terry and his pace makers will be on Friday 25th April 08, when the Group will be supporting Step2Health on their walk at Newport.  Please meet at the Newport (Pembs) Yacht Club Car park at 10.00 am afterwards we will be having a refreshing cuppa.
