News - 9th January 2009

A happy healthy 2009 to you all, hoping you all managed to organise some exercise during the festive period.

Our very first meeting of 2009 took place at the Fishguard Leisure Centre on a cold crisp frosty Friday morning 9th January 09. Some confusion over the new starting times was clearly evident by the strewn out arrival times by some members, however Terry Main and Ian Smith our Fitness Instructors did show clemency and patience in the obvious bewilderment of Cardiac Patients arrival times. Having had no Rehabilitation Programme for the past three weeks the social chatter and idle gossip could clearly be heard being exchanged amongst the members, which indeed is all classed as an integral part of the recovery programme. It was also clearly obvious from the portly figures and aching joints observed during exercise that over indulgence in eating of the “goodies” and lack of exercise over the festive period had taken consequential effect on the torso, when numerous moans and groans could be heard. More new exciting exercises were introduced and were enjoyed by all.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Irene our Cardiac Nursing Specialist who is currently incapacitated. It was rewarding to see Barrie Evans of Vergam Terrace back in commission after suffering a nasty fall during the holiday period.

Birthday greeting to all those members celebrating “Birthdays” during January, in particular special wishes to Freda Liebscher & Sarah Jane Jones who will both be celebrating different milestone Birthdays ending with a Zero. Many congratulations to you all.

On 16th December 2008, one hundred & nine Patients & Carers from Cardiac Rehabilitation Groups around Pembrokeshire enjoyed a wonderful Christmas lunch at the “Beggar’s Reach Country Hotel Burton albeit only 92 members had booked for the event, which did leave the organisers and Hotel management in a quandary on how to accommodate the additional seventeen but all was resolved amicably. Of the many magnificent donated raffle prizes, Fishguard Cardiac Members were very fortunate or embarrassingly enough to win half of them.

Thanks to Ruth Coulson, a local artist and Cardiac Patient, who designed and manufactured one hundred packs of unique Christmas cards of which were all sold, by various members of the Group in particular Sarah Jane Jones, just before the festive season interlude.

Sponsorship monies are still pouring in for Ann Palmer’s very courageous New Years Day swim at Saundersfoot, in aid of the Fishguard Cardiac Rehabilitation Group. Well-done Ann on you’re very valiant and heart chilling evolution to help benefit Heart Patients to which we are told, there are over 2,800 people waiting for heart surgery in Pembrokeshire alone.

Our next merry meeting of Terry and his pacemakers will be at the Fishguard Leisure Centre on Friday 16th January 09 with the first session starting at 09.30 am until 11.30 am with the other sessions following on accordingly.
