News - 24th April 2009

Members were eager to get into exercise mode after the extended Easter holiday, albeit many moans and groans could be heard, from under exercised stiffen joints. However Terry our fitness instructor was very compassionate to members’ condition and gently persuaded members into some tailored exercises to ease the aches and pains.

Irene our Cardiac Nursing Specialist was overjoyed in having passed her driving test on 21st April 09. Well-done Irene & many congratulations from us all.

The secretary in his many announcements stated he had attended a presentation evening at the St Brides Hotel, Saundersfoot on Thursday 23rd April 09 where he was presented with a cheque for £450.00 from the Saundersfoot Activities Association who were the organisers of the New Years Day sponsored swim. Mrs Anne Palmer, from Stepaside volunteered to undertake this challenging task and managed to raise £450.00 for the Fishguard Cardiac group in her sponsored swim. Anne requested monies raised by her efforts be donated to two projects, first in the production of a training DVD for the Healthy Heart Conference to be held at the Wolfscastle Hotel on 8th May 09, which will demonstrate the benefits to patients of the Cardiac Rehabilitation programme, and secondly, remaining balance of money to Morriston Hospital in the development & training of a new Heart & Lung machine, which will be used in all open Heart surgery. The machine will not only benefit patients in Pembrokeshire but also across Wales. Many thanks Anne for your kind thought, bravery and benevolent act. Over 50 other organisations and charities were recognised and benefited from wonderful donations raised at the 25th Annual sponsored New Year Day Swim at Saundersfoot. Congratulations and much gratitude to all the organisers & participants of the event in a brilliant & charitable tribute to so many organisations.

Sarah Jones a Cardiac Patient, in all her wonderful efforts for the British Heart Foundation fund-raising event on 13th February 09 raised £452.00, which will help in the research into Heart disease, which kills over 200,000 people each year. Well-done Sarah and all her helpers.

Sincere best wishes for a speedy recovery were extended to Mary Palmer (secretary’s wife) who had open-heart surgery at Morriston Hospital during the week. Also best wishes to better health were offered to Mr & Mrs Grover. It was also rewarding to see Shirley Inman back into exercise mode after her period of incapacity.

Members are requested to note there will not be any Rehabilitation Programme on Friday 8th May 09. Our next regular meeting of Terry and his Pacemakers will be on Friday 1st May 09. Do not forget your “swipe card” the new method of making your payment for the Cardiac Rehabilitation session at the Fishguard Leisure Centre, reception desk. Healthy Eating Tip No 3 – To stay healthy we need some fat in our diets. What is important is the kind of fat we are eating. Try to eat less meat pies, sausages, and meat with visible white fat. Hard cheese, butter & lard, pastry, cakes & biscuits, & cream all of which contain high saturated fats. Having too much saturated fat can increase the amount of cholesterol in our blood, which increases the chance of developing heart disease. Help us to help you.
