On St Davids Day, 1st March 05, 24 members weathered the bitterly cold winds to join in the afternoon’s regular meeting at St Teresa’s Convent Hall to listen to Josephine Thomas’s tales of curiosity and superstition.

Membership numbers were well down due to illness and other mundane factors to which apologies were given on behalf of the following: -

Ben Fenemore, Mona James, Margaret Phillips (Letterston), Margaret Phillips (Trevine), Brenda Jauch, Robert Warlow, Lillian Rees, Dorothy Beckwith, Mr & Mrs Ivor Evans, Mr & Mrs Len Langford, Mr & Mrs Vaughan Evans and Rita Rowles.

The Chairman requested a moment’s silence to reflect upon the happy times shared with Billy Affley who had passed away during February. Billy was a happy, socialable and lovable member and will be missed by all Club members. Our thoughts and prayers are with his dear sister Mary who has cared for him since his Stroke.

Judi Chapman is undergoing treatment at Singleton Hospital but hopefully will be transferred back to Withybush in the very near future, then to convalesce at St Teresa’s. Best wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery were given.

The Chairman announced the good fortune of the Club in having the support of the Big Lottery Fund of £23,970 and also The Rank Foundation’s cheque of £500. Monies are to be allocated to the respite holidays over the next three-year period.

Members were invited to put forward their suggestions for possible venues for 2006 & 2007. This years respite holiday has already been duly planned and very well organised by Wendy Bindon to take members to Plymouth. During our stay in Plymouth, members will join festivities with the Plymouth Activity Stroke Club, plus day tours to various locations within the vicinity. Evening entertainment has also been organised by Plymouth Lions & Rotarians.

Members were also invited to offer their input to next years programme of events and hopefully pleasing majority of members.

Josephine Thomas was once again welcomed back into the Stroke Club by the Chairman, Mr Michael Lewis, and a rapturous round of applause was given by the members, and not knowing what Josephine was going to offer, Michael swiftly handed the gavel and podium space to her.

“Superstition” was her opening word. She questioned member’s apathy towards superstition and so called “birth signs”. Identifying each member’s birth dates and their characteristics bought much hilarity to the floor.

Other superstitious thoughts were brought to mind and how in some aspects were in fact reality, why do we not walk under ladders, what happens when the cockerel crows at night, why don’t hot cross buns go stale, the list is endless but you’ll have to invite Josephine to your meeting to find out the reasoning.

The Chairman gave a vote of thanks on behalf of all Club members for a most enjoyable afternoon.

Brian Dickin our resident raffle master managed to raise £42 from the abundance of raffle prizes as so generously donated to which our most grateful thanks is given. Ann Harries enhance the coffers by buying two beautifully dressed Welsh Dolls. Many thanks Ann for your kindness.

Sincere thanks to the hard working ladies in the preparation of tea and the mundane washing-up duties.

Our next meeting will be held at St Teresa’s Convent Hall on Tuesday 15th March 05 when we invite you all to don those “Cowboy Hats & Boots” and join in the Line Dancing. For more information please contact Michael on 01348 840282 or John on 01348 872240 or why not visit our website www.fishguardstrokeclub.co.uk as so generously sponsored by ePembs.
