Our meeting held on Tuesday 18th October 05 brought a host of surprises. The first surprise was the heralding of a prestigious Stroke Association Courage Award to Mrs Joyce Green, who is one of the founder members of the Club - image of the award can be found at the bottom of this page. A commendation certificate as signed by HRH the Duke of Kent is the very first certificate of its kind to be presented to a Stroke victim in this country. Chairman Michael Lewis was delighted to have the honour in making the presentation to Joyce, which received a generous round of applause from other members assembled.
The Secretary informed members, nominations for the Stroke Association Awards can and should be submitted annually, for which every member in the Stroke Club is genuinely entitled.
Mrs Margaret Povey was greeted as the guest speaker for the afternoon to talk on Antiques.
Margaret explained the definition of Antiques as items of worldly possessions over 100 years old. Also informed members to the secrets of identifying fake & reproduction goods. Some antiques were displayed on the tables for members to view and guest the value, which when the value was disclosed brought grasping astonishments sounds from members. Members brought along some endearing pieces of heirlooms for Margaret to value, which indeed brought many more surprises. One lady brought a small porcelain French terrier dog, which could be sold at an auction for many hundreds of pounds. So the afternoon developed into much excitement and anticipation for the members and was enjoyed by all.
The chairman thanked Mrs Povey for her delightful talk and valuation of member’s treasures and welcomed her to revisit the Club within the near future.
Apologies were given on behalf of the following members: -
Sue & Len Langford, Margaret & Bert Phillips, Sheila & Larry Evans, Vaughan & Olivia Evans, Ivor Evans, Mona James, Terry Williams, Roger Hibben & Ann Goodman.
