Anxiety was the expression on the Club’s Chairman’s face puzzling what to do to keep Club members entertained for the afternoon on Tuesday 19th October 04. However, like a prayer from heaven our Guest speaker Mr Les Griffiths arrived offering apologies for his unavoidable lateness.
The Chairman reported Doreen Swailes and Judi Chapman had been in and out of hospital. Ben Fenemore has had a nasty fall, sustaining cuts and bruises to his face. Joyce Green had fractured her ankle but it was so nice to have her presences once again albeit in her wheelchair. Mona James was making steady progress in her recovery. Best wishes to better health were extended to them all.
Apologies had been received from: - Wendy & Graham Bindon, Ivor & Peggy Evans, Vaughan & Olivia Evans, Sue & Len Langford, Mona James, Brenda Jauch, Dorothy Beckwith, Judi Chapman, Doreen Swailes and Ben Fenemore.
Once again October is a very popular month for birthdays. Birthday cards and a rendering of “Happy Birthday” were given to Rita Rowles, Tony Green and Larry Evans.
Michael reported another special wedding anniversary this time a Golden, had been celebrated by Les and Gwen Griffiths our guest speaker for the afternoon. This news brought a rapturous round of applause from members present.
Rita was kept extremely busy seeking names for those attending our next three activities to be held on 4th November – Lunch at The Salutation Inn, 18th November – Shopping Trip to Llanelli and 7th December – Christmas Lunch at Tavernspite. Demands for all three venues were heavily patronised.
Ann Goodman volunteered to arrange and organize name the “Teddy Bear” competition so as to raise funds for next years respite holiday to be held at Plymouth.
Michael welcomed and introduced the Guest speaker for the afternoon Mr Les Griffiths who was known to many members. Les, who just could not think of a title for his address suggested, “Laughter is a tonic to us all”. Quoting memorable stories from days gone by and Jokes taken from publications by Bruce John. On numerous occasions he had to wait several minutes for the laughter to subside before continuing. One lady member was ecstatic over the joke of giving a cat its medication and had to be wheeled to the toilet to avoid an accident but was still laughing on her return. The Chairman thanked Les for the afternoon’s entertainment and congratulated him on how it was a tonic to us all. Reading in the editorials these days all you get is doom and gloom. How nice it was to see and feel happiness within a group that have borne the cruel afflictions of Stroke, helping them rise above their problems.
Brian Dickin conducted the raffle, even to extract more money from member’s pockets to partake in St Teresa’s Rest Home annual Christmas raffle. Thank you to all members that donated so many raffle prizes.
Amongst all the Ladies completing the “washing up” duties it was observed one gentleman undergoing training or a refresher course in such duties under the name of Tony Green. Thank you Ladies & Tony in all your sterling efforts.
As already mentioned in a previous report, the Club has received some fantastic prizes for their Christmas Prize Bingo, to be held at the Fishguard Railwaymen’s Club on Thursday 25th November 04 “Eyes down” at 8.30pm.
Our next meeting will be Lunch at The Salutation Inn. Pick-up times: - Letterston Square 11.00am, Rita’s 11.10am, Scleddau 11.15am, Pendre 11.20am and Lowertown 11.30am.
