The Fishguard & District Stroke Club has been awarded a substantial grant from the Big Lottery Fund of £23,970.
This award will help to sustain the valuable work the Club offers Stroke victims and their Carers within the area to rise above their cruel afflictions caused by Stroke in providing Recreational and Social amenities combined with some rehabilitation therapy.
The grant has been awarded to support an annual one-week respite holiday for Stroke victims and their carers over the next three-year period. Monies will go towards Accommodation, Transportation and Insurance costs, plus the purchase of a Laptop computer, so as to aid administration of the project and also to disseminate up to date information on Stroke Care, also portray holiday photographs to unfortunate Stroke victims that are house bound living in isolated areas.
Captain A. Viv Rowles founded the Club in October 1998 with 12 members, meeting at St Teresa’s Convent Hall, Heol Dewi, Fishguard, between 1.30pm & 3.30pm by kind permission of Sister Rose. The Club membership has grown over the years to the current standing of 64 members, who come from numerous isolated areas around North Pembrokeshire.
The Chairman Mr Michael Lewis was literality speechless (for once) on receiving the news but on his recovery stated how magnificent it was to reap such an awarded to help unfortunate Stroke patients and their Carers within our District. This news will help our members build upon their confidence and self-esteem, he said, and will help “recharge their batteries” on these respite holidays so as to ease them back into their own communities and hopefully break down those barriers of Social exclusion & Isolation to which had confronted them. He continued by adding how proud he was to have such a dedicated committee behind him who gave so much of their valuable time, guidance and effort helping to bring a better quality of life for Stroke patients and their Carers, all given voluntary.
The President, Mr Ben Fenemore echoed the Chairman’s comments adding commendation must also be given to Cllr David Williams of Fishguard & Goodwick Town Council for his valuable input and also to Mr Tony Crotty, Pembrokeshire County Council, Regeneration Unit in his help and guidance throughout the preparation and paperwork involved in the application of this wonderful grant to our Club. Mr Fenemore continued, respite holidays require much planning and organising and indeed a lot of money to which “we” are most grateful to the Big Lottery Fund for their help so we can plan for the next three years, but we still need the generous support of the general public within the District to help meet our aims & objectives to enrich the quality of life for Stroke victims and their Carers.
Big Lottery Fund is the joint operating name of the New Opportunities Fund and the National Lottery Charities Board (which made grants under the name of the Community Fund). Big Lottery Fund, launched on 1st June 2004, is distributing half of all National Lottery good cause funding across UK.
